A former industrialist and politician, Henry Tang was Chief Secretary for Administration from 2007 to 2011. He has also served as Financial Secretary, chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and a steward of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Henry is also a keen connoisseur and collector of wine.
In the world of wine, many call him sifu, or master, particularly in the realm of Burgundy. Over the course of four decades, he has amassed thousands of cases. In 2013, HK$48 million was paid for part of his collection, and he donated 12 bottles of Château Haut-Brion Blanc Vintage 1997 to Sotheby’s for charity. Henry Tang recalls that he became curious about wine when studying at the University of Michigan. “I was invited to a meal by one of my uncles when I first came back to Hong Kong to work. They opened a bottle of 1947 Cheval Blanc, which was a revelation as to how great wine could be.” A simple dinner transformed into a lifelong passion.
